Friends? Followers?

Reported by openmedi | January 6th, 2011 @ 11:02 PM

What I did: I went to my profile page to see who is following me

What I expected to happen: I list of little profile pics appears, that shows the follower count

What actually happened: A list of "friends" is shown. These people aren't my friends. It' a list of people I follow.

There is no destiction between "friend" and the "user I follow" nor is there a way to know how many followers I have…

Yeah, you're right. The actual default "friend" view is going away (and probably the name "friend") in place there's going to be a dashboard where you can see friends/followers and other activity on your account. It is definitely a page to be built so I am going to leave this ticket as "OPEN" until we have a page that satisfies this requirement.

Awww... I always thought it was kind of cool that mlkshk didn't show "followers." :)

It's a feature that never seems to make it in. We like not having followers easily viewable as well. I think we're just never going to do it, at least not in a direct way, perhaps for shakes…

I really thought hard about it, but I can't come up with a good reason for not showing a list of people that follow me. Could you explain why this is a good idea? I'm all in for reduction and simplicity and stuff but this seems like an arbitrary move to me… I'm confused. What is wrong with showing who is following me (or others) ? :)

The only reason I think we don't like it is the competition to get followers, and the resulting drama/weirdness when someone stops following you. Twitter Social Media Mavens who quote their 10,000+ follower count I think is what this is in reaction to.

Is the reason you want to see your followers is to be able to follow them back? Because we could easily solve that with the friend finder. Right now (in dev) it's finding people you follow on Twitter, but it could easily show you people who follow you who you don't follow.

I understand and get your point. Right now I am able to see if someone new is following me and it is easy to see if the already follow me, I think I can live with that. But feel free to integrate it, if you finde the time. ;)

I have to say, that the reason for not having a list of followers seems a little weak, to be perfectly honest. The concept of "followers" is closely associated with follower counts and influence, so maybe the Twitter-style of socializing is not what you want? When more and more people will inhabit mlkshk, I'm pretty sure I will not be the only one who asks, "Where are my followers?". Also, it is certainly a kind of motivation to see how many people are follwing me (and in the end how many people are seeing my images), like "favs" and "saves" are right now on mlkshk. The "drama" you describe is also a way of keeping people honest, which is a good thing (It's not Facebook). The drama could also be a lot bigger, because I am only able to discover a certain user doesn't follow me anymore by accident.

Also, I am not sure if social media peeps are a problem, because the user decides who to follow. S/He doesn't have to care, nor to see the follower counts, of those people.

    Just some thoughts ;)

We're definitely going to do it. I think it just ended up with a lower priority and now we're trying to get back to it. This will be done.
