Firefox extension fails with "uh oh page can't be found" from within Gmail

Reported by mzurer | April 28th, 2011 @ 11:54 AM

What I did: While reading a message in Gmail with photo attachments, I clicked on "view all attachments" which gives you a page consisting of all the attached photos to a message. Then I tried to use the Firefox extension to bring one over to mlkshk.

What I expected to happen: Get the usual file upload/save page

What actually happened: I got the "uh oh page not found" error

I saved the actual photo to my desktop and then uploaded it to my own server and the extension worked fine from there (http://mikezurer.com/jpg/Bikeride.jpg), so it's likely something to do with how Gmail is presenting it.

The photo is now at http://mlkshk.com/p/1S2W

    Hi there,

This actually has to do with the fact that files that are in your personal GMail account can't be read by the MLKSHK server. When you first open the popup it points to the file using your credentials since you are signed into the GMail server, but when MLKSHK tries to load the file it is denied due to it being locked in your account.

We could look into not loading the file if we sense that it is being served out of a protected URL or at least if it's being loaded out of gmail.com.

Aha - I know very little about modern web programming, so it didn't occur to me that the file would be protected in that way, though of course I can't send you an email with a url inside my gmail session and expect you to be able to see it. Interestingly (well to me anyway!) I am able to use the extension from within a pw protected Menalto Gallery page, as well an another pw-protected site with a heap of files. But that's probably just instructive as to how those sites/platforms treat credentialing as well as their target audiences.

Anyway! Now I know - maybe a more descriptive error for more naive web users like myself could help in this case?

    Thanks for looking into it!

Oh! Never mind! The Gallery pic gets as far as the page with the preview pic, editable title and comment boxes, and "save this" button - but it errors out when I click "save this."

    The other site does work.
